President Bush is coming to Texas this morning, to raise money for John Cornyn, then fly to San Antonio for a photo op with injured soldiers. He is to visit a Veterans Facility built with private funds. Nothing like privatizing our Veterans health care. You have to thank those who donated money ($15 Million) to build the "Center for the Intrepid" in San Antonio. Their service to the members of the armed forces wounded in combat is greatly appreciated.
But with $560 Billion a year spent on our military, it is hard to believe we do not have $15 Million to provide these types of services for our wounded and instead must rely on private donations. This is shameful.
We spend more on military spending in one year than the ENTIRE world put together and yet we have to depend upon private donations to provide facilities for our Veterans?
At least it will give a great opportunity for a photo op for Bush just prior to Veterans Day. Let's hope he wears his flight suit like he did for his last photo op.

Ha! Much truth here.
The sad thing is that our great vets are probably in much better hands with private sector medical care. Our government can't seem to do anything well (except spend money taken from us at gunpoint)and the Walter Reed debacle is a prime example.
May the good Lord help us all if the Government initiates any sort of 'Universal Health Care', socialized plan. Let's get the Government out of ALL of our affairs - they're incompetent elitists at best, and out-of-touch crooks at worst.

I believe that the $15 million facility was paid for by privately raised/donated $$$$ and is operated as part of the V.A. Admin. Don Imus was one of the movers & shakers in the fundraising.
Turns out it is $50 Million. .0001% of the yearly military budget.
What are we spending $560Billion on if not facilities like this?
You know that is a good point anonymous. Lets keep spending $560 Billion a year on the military, and let the private sector handle all of our veterans health care problems.
When the donations run out, the Vets can just suck it up.
Or better yet, let them file on their insurance company. If they don't have insurance, well, too bad.
Yea. That's the ticket.
No, you misunderstand.
My point is to take all the federal money collected by the government earmarked for veterans' health care and let the private sector COMPETE for the administration of health care benefits and services.
There'd be far less waste of time and money, less governmental red tape AND the veterans would be getting a much higher quality of care, which they certainly deserve.
Private donations are NOT the answer; I never suggested they were. Read a little more closely before you satirize one essentially on the same side as you.

Uh.....they do that now. With government oversight.
Just like hallibernton.
"Uh.....they do that now. With government oversight.
Just like hallibernton"(sic).
Uhhh, you might want to alert the VA hospitals around the country - you've uncovered a great conspiracy here.
The point in my initial post is the same as yours!! I am not arguing the angle of the article at all!! It is a SHAME that the private donating sector sees a real need to be met which our government, despite all the money it takes in and (worse) spends on the war in Iraq, cannot adequately allocate it to serve the needs of our injured veterans.
Maybe "hallibernton" SHOULD get into the Health Care industry; just to make those like you without an original thought(or name, apparently)so mad that spelling or accuracy of thought becomes a problem.
I'm on your side here - please just read a bit more carefully.

The military.
As a veteran, you should know this: The VA is not part of the military. It is a separate executive department, with a budget of more than $80 billion.

Oh, and check your arithmetic, John. What is it you do at NASA, anyway?
