Teachers pay raise: $430. Governors pay raise: $32,000.

In the budget being debated in the Texas Capitol:

Pay raise for our Texas school teachers: $430.
Pay raise for Governor Rick Perry: $32,000.
Pay raise for Attorney General Abbott: $25,000
Pay raise for the Commissioner of the Teacher Retirement System: $151,000.
Watching the Republican leadership handed their ass in Nov 2008: Priceless.

A budget may be a moral document, but this is brazen piracy.

Rotten bastards. All of them.

As I have said before, this demonstrates why Republicans can no longer be trusted with governing this state. Enough is enough.

As a veteran educator w/ advanced degrees I doubt I shall ever be able to retire at an age where I can enjoy myself by walking.
I believe the state will have to add more handicapped spaces to teacher's parking lots, nurses will have to visit campuses to give veteran teachers their medication and handicapped accesible will be the order of the day as we will nedd wheelchairs to get around. I shall be emailing your post so that all educators can see how screwed they are in this state. No real pay raise, no social security, increased health insurance etc.
But let's not forge the Republicans are leading the life Riley at our expense.

Please forward. Unfortunately no matter how much the republican party screws our teachers, the ones in my area continue to vote for them.

If they do in Nov 2008, then they deserve the $430 raise.

I hope they will join us throw these immoral bums out.

Every month in the next two years, every Texas teacher, when filling up their car for the first time that month should stop when they reach 5 gallons, and then curse the Texas legislature. Why? Because your raise is already gone. If you get paid, like I do, 24 times a year (2x month), then your $430 equals about 5 gallons of gas per check at 2007 prices. It will probably be less in 2009. Now we know what the Texas Legislature thinks teachers are worth - 5 gallons of gas.

Don't think the Democrats will be any better - look at the disaster that is NCLB, Ted Kennedy wrote that bill. Look at the pork filled bills in Washington D.C. Democrats promised to end that practice if they were elected in '06. See how well that worked out? Teachers can't trust either party. I look at the individual politician - if they vote my issues, regardless of party affiliation, then I vote for them.

Bob,

This state has been run by the republican party for 10 years now. Don't blame the Democrats because you simply have no grounds.

The Democrats called for a $6000 increase in teacher pay. The Republican leadership reduced this to $800 to pay for more tax cuts.

Then they reduced it again to $430 to pay for business tax cuts.

The Democrats led the fight afainst these cuts and against privatization.

Enjoy your tax cut.

1% pay raise -- sure does piss me off.

John Coby said...

It PISSES me off! And I'm not a teacher!

Hell, our State Rep voted himself a $6000 increase in his retirement! He is going to get $42,000/year for the rest of his life after serving only 8 part time years in office.

Anyone here have a pension like that? Guaranteed after 8 part time years?

John,

It's 12 years service required and you can retire at 50.

Or 8 years and retire at 60.

How long has John Davis served? He's 47 years old.

Most people aren't aware of these retirement perks. They can affect decisions of legislators to go ahead and retire and move onto lobbyist riches.

It's a good thing that only the republican slugs benefit from the abuses of government power.

Stop the madness!

Bob,

It was the republican leadership who initiated these and sustained them.

Remember they have been in control for over 10 years.

Teachers have not received ANY raise if you factor in their increased insurance costs and TRS contributions increasing from 6.4 to 6.58%. That increase alone cuts out close to $100/yr. for most teachers.
Regarding our illustriuos governor's pay raise, his INCREASE is the equivalent to a year's salary for an educator with 6 years of service.
I e-mailed him and told him he would line item veto that raise if he had any aspirations of serving another term and reminded him of the consequences incurred by many of his colleagues this past November who continuosly turned a deaf ear to the needs and concerns those in public education.

Granted, it was our decision to come to this state, but my wife (a teacher) now makes over $10,000 less than in her last state. Wow.

John,
When are you and the rest of our society going to understand that this is not a Republican or Democrat thing. The Republican and Democratic parties were originally setup and fostered to create a division among the American voters. Do you really think that things change in the least when we go from a Republican administration to a Democratic administration. This has nothing to do with Republicans against Democrats. It has to do with Americans against politicians. All politicians are only interested in feathering their own beds and screwing the average American. Let's forget about party lines and start to vote every incumbent out of office and when the new man gets in office, tell him he has 4 years to get the job done or we will turn him out of office too. After a few of these kind of elections, maybe we'll get people in office who understand the consequences of not keeping their promises.

All I have to say to Tx teachers is: Move to CA. California is the place for teachers to go ( highest pay in the nation for teachers). I live there and teach for LAUSD-the district covers all health care costs! And because of unions we get good raises. I make $1600 a month (after taxes and all) more than I would if I taught in Tx. and the weather is nicer in the summers. THey also move you up quicker on the pay ladder and any class you take after college counts towards salary points that increas your pay a lot.Tx needs to change its backwards treatment towards teachers and give them the respect they deserve- let it show up in their pocket books. I could not as a single woman buy a house in Tx, afford a new car, and pay health insurance without barely getting by, and this is VERY sad considering how hard I work. I will vote for any politician that improves teacher pay and health insurance costs- I think the dems are a better choice this year. Let's change the sterotype others have of Texas being backwards and extra conservative. Till then, I'm not moving back to Tx. I'm happy in L.A.
