Drafting Houston City Councilman Michael Berry for Iraq.

Michael Berry is an educated professional, a Houston City Councilman, and a right wing talk show host on KPRC 950AM. On his Tuesday morning show he claimed to have "reamed" Congressman Charlie Rangel (D-New York) disputing his claim that few educated professionals are volunteering to serve in Iraq.

Unfortunately his first caller "reamed" Michael Berry, asking why Berry, who is a young 36 years old, hasn't volunteered for service himself. As an educated professional, he can lead by example and volunteer for combat to support the war in Iraq, support the President, and support the troops by bringing one home. The caller reminded Berry that many of the troops are serving their 2nd or 3rd tours and support from young educated professionals like himself is greatly needed.

And since he is term limited as a City Councilman, he will have the perfect opportunity to show his patriotism, and plenty of time to accomplish the mission.

You can hear the caller here.

But, don't hold your breath waiting for Michael Berry to shoot a gun in Iraq, instead of shooting his mouth off about Iraq. Like most conservative right wingers who claim they support the troops, Berry will probably have as many excuses not to fight for his country, as Bush had to justify the need for him to fight in Iraq.

So, maybe we need to start a Draft Michael Berry campaign so he could have the same opportunity to fight in Iraq just like all young, patriotic, educated professionals have.

P.S. I'm turning blue.

Come on, John. If you're going to pull a stunt like this, at least take credit for it.

According to Michael Berry's bio:

In 1997, Michael Berry left the practice of law at the firm of Jenkens & Gilchrist....

Jenkens and Gilchrist just got busted for tax fraud.

Birds of a feather......

These right winged "patriotic" pro-war chicken hawks need to be called out. They always have a sorry excuse for their hypocrisy. And they have the nerve to say "we" need to have courage to stay in the war, (Bush said that). No one in their safe US homes needs courage to stay in this war. That is demanded of our soldiers and the best thing we can do for them is to bring them home to the safety we all enjoy. To try and hang on the coat tails of someone else's bravery is just as low as you can go. We see your true color real clear Michael Berry.

So what you are saying is that you don't REALLY believe in an all-volunteer military.

My only question is this -- are you one of those (like John Murtha and Charlie Rangel) who believes (like Fidel Castro) that all citizens are property of the state and should be forced into a period of mandatory government slavery, or are you one of those who believes that one cannot believe in and advocate a strong national defense without actually serving in the military (a fascist, rather than communist, view of citizenship)?

No. Read the post again.

Anon at 3:03 makes an impressive rant against the obligations of citizenship. Mandatory public service, such a a military draft, is neither communistic nor fascistic. It wasn't communistic or fascistic when we had a draft in World War II, nor when we had it during Vietnam (though it was a bad idea during the latter). Sacrifice for the common good is a principle that has shaped our nation. Apparently anon wants all of the benefits, but none of the costs - he/she has GOT to be a Republican. George W. Bush says we are in the fight of our lives, but doesn't have anyone from his family in it, nor do most members of Congress, nor do they expect most Americans to engage in it. There is a reason why George W. Bush is down in the 30's in his approval rating, actually lots of them. A failure to call for shared sacrifice is another one to add to that very long list.

Matt said...

nor do they expect most Americans to engage in it

And why should they expect "most Americans" to engage in it?

If the House Democrats want to defund 140,000 or so troops, what makes you think they'll fund a 150-million-strong force?

Hey Matt!

You can carry Michael Berry's jock strap in Iraq!

Profound and classy as ever, anonymous.

Yea, but that is FUNNY!

"Why should they expect most Americans to engage in it"?

Because this is, as George Bush has put it many times, "the fight of our lives". Obviously something that important ought to be engaged in by all of us - or else the president's words have no meaning. And why do you think that the words "engage in it" are synonymous with "join the military"? How about if we, uh, pay taxes to support it, or reduce consumption of foreign oil that finances terrorism, something logical like that? Or is that too complicated for you to figure out, Matt?

Matt said...

And why do you think that the words "engage in it" are synonymous with "join the military"?

Because your compatriot John keeps saying things like:

Read (sic) to shoot their mouths off about "supporting the troops", but not willing to shoot a gun and really support the troops.

Matt said...

How about if we, uh, pay taxes to support it, or reduce consumption of foreign oil that finances terrorism, something logical like that?

We do pay taxes. Trillions of dollars in taxes.

And I'm all for reduced consumption of foreign energy sources. On a policy level, more coal and nuclear power plants would help us achieve that goal. On a personal level, I take steps to conserve energy just like anyone else -- fuel-efficient car, compact fluorescent light bulbs and the like.

I've even been known to plant a tree on occasion.

playmisty4me said...

Matt, are you truly as dumb as you appear? I must conclude that you are, given your response to my last comment. We all pay taxes. But we are paying for the war by credit card. Surely you have heard of the federal deficit, have you not? We have those billions and billions we are spending on Iraq because we issue debt instruments, t-bills, savings bonds - to be paid off by the taxes paid by our children and grandchildren. Surely even someone of your limited abilities can understand that concept. Your answer is pure bullshit - it is a factless diversion from the truth, like virtually everything else you write.

There you have it.

Matt is stupid.

And chicken

Matt said...

Playmisty, I think I remember you saying that you've got a degree in economics. So you'll know what I mean when I say that money is fungible. We're not just borrowing to pay for the war. We're borrowing to pay for the entire functioning of the Federal government.

Decades of shoveling the Social Security surplus into the general kitty haven't helped either.

Just found your blog. Glad I did. I'm in Houston too.

I'm for drafting Michael Berry. Maybe it would help him discover how important free speech is. I heard on KPFT 90.1 this morning that he is going to try and stop the Freeway Bloggers on 59. This should be interesting.

Hmm...idea for a new freeway blog sign....DRAFT MICHAEL BERRY.

John Coby said...

DRAFT MICHAEL BERRY!

I DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU TO MAKE THAT SIGN!

One hell of an idea!

Did you see the Michael Berry story on Ch. 13 tonight? He shot of his mouth and offended American Indians. This guy is a war monger!

Here is the story:

Councilman Michael Berry has a daily radio show on KPRC 950 AM in Houston.

Berry said on that show on March 27 that American Indians do not deserve the federal assistance that they're getting because they were "whipped in a war."

He also said this about Indians, "We conquered them."

The comments were galling for Cheryl and Steve Melendez, co-founders of the American Indian Genocide Museum in Houston. Cheryl Melendez says you want to believe that things are changing, but she's been left disappointed by Berry's remarks.

The remarks also are getting a reaction on Indianz.com, a Web site dedicated to American Indian issues.

Besides being a Houston city councilman, Berry is that city's mayor pro tem. That means he fills in for certain duties when the mayor's not available.

Berry did not return messages left Wednesday by The Associated Press.

Matt - of course I understand that a dollar is fungible. And my congratulations for knowing that word. Let me see if I understand your logic. What you are saying is that because we were already in debt before George W. invaded Iraq, it's ok for him to put us deeper into debt to pay for it? Actually, the war debt will be affecting our children and grandchildren, since those of us alive won't be around long enough to pay off the debt we've already racked up. Nice Bush legacy, future generations facing bankruptcy. (And doesn't the military have a minimum height requirement?)

Matt said...

Nice Bush legacy, future generations facing bankruptcy.

What makes you say that? The current debt level is about 70 percent of GDP. After World War II, it was well over 100 percent.

By your logic, we should have already seen total economic collapse, since you claim high debt leads to "bankruptcy" within two generations. And yet that collapse hasn't come. We're growing at a decent clip.

Misty -- so I think it is therefore fair to say that you believe that mandatory involuntary servitude is an obligation of citizenship. How long have you had this hostility to the 13th Amendment, and would it be safe for me to conclude that such hostility is still as prevalent today among you Democrats as it was in 1865?

And by the way, I pay the costs of citizenship -- my 1040 proves that, along with my property tax bill.

John, Berry is also too old for the Navy and Air Force. Do you do even a modicum of research before writing?
