It's official. Texas worst place to live in US.

If you haven't been paying attention, or your head has been stuck in the sand for the last 6 years, or you've been too busy working making ends meet and keeping your kids in school, then you probably haven't notice that Texas is now the worst place to live in the United States.

The report titled "Texas on the Brink" by State Senator Eliot Shapleigh paints a bleak picture of Texas in almost every category used to rate places to raise a family. These categories include the environment, health care, womens issues, education, and more. And the ratings are a result of the Republican leadership of the state over the last 6 years.

According to the report, this is how Texas ranks among the 50 States today:

  • Percentage of Uninsured Children

1st

  • Income Inequality Between the Rich and the Poor

2nd

  • Percentage of Population without Health Insurance

1st

  • Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) Scores

47th

  • Percentage of Population over 25 with a High School Diploma

50th

  • Percentage of Non-Elderly Women with Health Insurance

50th

  • Rate of Women Aged 40+ Who Receive Mammograms

44th

  • Rate of Women Aged 18+ Who Receive Pap Smears

47th

  • Cervical Cancer Rate

5th

  • Women's Voter Registration

43rd

  • Women's Voter Turnout

49th

  • Percentage of Eligible Voters that Vote

44th

Add to this list that Texas has the highest rates for home insurance, 25% higher than 2nd place Louisiana.
(See The Most Expensive States To Insure Your Home 2005 by Forbes Magazine.) Deregulation of electricity has resulted in skyrocketing electricity costs instead of more competition that would reduce our rates, as promised. College education costs have soared by an average of 39% in just one short year once again as a result of deregulation.

For those with their heads still in the sand, do yourself a favor and look at your bills, your tax statement, and read "Texas on the Brink".

During the 2006 campaign Gov Perry looked into the camera and said "I'm proud of Texas. Are you?" I think the answer is very clear. Only Rick Perry could be proud of living in the worst state in the United States.

Thanks for this article. I'm linking your post to my blog, Dallas Progress.

I just looked at those Forbes ranking. Texas is 50% higher in insurance premiums than the 2nd most expensive state. That's absurd.

There is such a ridiculous dichotomy in these numbers. 2nd in birth rate, but 49th in immunizations. But as a whole, we don't vote. I don't get it.

On the real, I didn't want to hear Perry's address. It's all b.s anyway.

Thanks Kinky! If you had dropped out we could've kicked Perry out and made some progress.

Drop me an e-mail anytime. I'm a big fan of your writing.

Hey! thanks Michael!

My insurance just went up again. Ever since Austin started helping us with insurance reform, my rates have doubled and I lost water, sewer, and foundation damage.

This state really sucks. They keep electing these idiots while they pay out their ass.

But....raise their taxes by $50/year? And they will light the torches and march down the street.

Texas really sucks.

Thanks for the link!

"Liberal losers"? That's the best you can come up with?

Guess you don't mind paying those high insurance premiums,or those high electric costs or high college tuitions, or having the highest percentage of uninsured children in that state. If that's your idea of a good state, I guess you are in the right place and more than likely were one of the few who voted for Governor 39%. I think the evidence shows that the majority of people have higher aspirations for our state.

Welp, at least conservatives have some sort of goal in mind PAST tomorrow or the next day. At least most the conservatives give a flying crap about people fighting to preserve peace in the world. Liberals just sit on lofty thrones and point the finger. Better to try something than not to have a plan and whine and complain the whole time. All liberals on this site, here's a theory: Maybe you should get off your asses, learn to read so you know what your own party does wrong, and come up with some sort of an answer in retrospect with something GOOD your party has done in the past 100 years. That's a start.

Well, good. That means that the millions of people from all over the country and all over the world that have moved here in the past 25 years are pretty stupid to have stayed so long. So the ones who think it sucks that are still here are even more stupid, and the ones who left suck. Spread the word if you left. Tell your friends NOT to move here so they won't fuck it up like you did. Now, if we can just close the Mexican and Louisiana borders, most of those numbers and stats would change for the better dramatically.

As a resident of Houston, I exiled myself from Philadelphia and have never been back to that suck hole, Bud. Finding a bunch of ex-Philadelphians here in H-town, I never have to worry about visiting Philly just because I want a cheeses steak-and I can watch Eagles games on television.
The point is, I came to Houston because it's the exact opposite of Marcus Hook and Pennsylvania as a whole. Leading a Gothic lifestyle, I was constantly pulled over by police in Marcus Hook just because I was wearing all black clothing and eyeliner. I was constantly harassed and hurt by stupid, unintelligent people. I was constantly picked-on in high school because I was intelligent and creative.

I couldn't find an "out," not even in South Street in Philly, which was becoming more and more commercial. I became tired of seeing bumper stickers supporting Bush and Confederate flags abounding in the suburbs.

As I was making my exit, I had people ask me: "why are you moving to Texas? What's wrong with Philly?" The best comment was, "don't you know there are all those [insert epithet about homosexuals or Mexicans] out there?" Or, "you're going to get carjacked!"

Now that live here, I constantly have people finding me on classmate.com telling me how much they envy me for living out here.

Pennsylvania is a place where if you're smart, you get out. If you're not, you marry the girl you went with to the prom, have two kids by the time you're 25, work at Wal Mart and live on the same block where you grew up. You never go to Pittsburgh much less to any other part of your own state. If you somehow end up going to college, it's the closest college to where you attended high school.

I got out and I'm glad I did. I'll never forget the painful first 23 years of my life there. I'll never let anyone there (who's quick to defend Pennsylvania) get away with being so stupid, like Bud.

"Well at least one of us is smart enough to leave."

Unfortunately, all the California losers like you that are leaving are being replaced a hundred times over here, even in what were small cities. They'll ruinDalhart just like they ruined Austin, with their foul language and goofy ideas. All you see up there are California plates. Losers. Good luck out in looney land.

DALHART — Dust Bowl towns such as Dalhart once supplied the desperate souls who made the storied Depression-era migration to California's lush fields.

Seven decades later, fortunes are reversing. Now, the seemingly limitless plains in Texas' northernmost reaches have become the agricultural promised land for California dairy farmers seeking to escape high costs, regulation and pasture-devouring sprawl.

"It is remote, and I'll tell you what: It took a little getting used to," said Richard Avila, who's in the process of moving much of his family's 119-year-old Northern California dairy operation to the Panhandle. "But every time I go back home to California, I can't wait to get back to Texas."

"Dear Ex-Philly Goth Tool,"

This is a perfect example of what I mean. Thanks for sending us your wierdos, PA. And by the way, the Economist magazine that said 'Burgh is "one" of the most livable cities in the country, remember, those ratings change every year, depending on how much the chamber pays them.So next year it will be back to where it belongs: the sewer that it is when I visited last. Ugh.

There is only one person that comes to mind thats Dr Ron Paul. He is running as a republican. If you go back say 200 years and read the Constitution, he is more like one of those people. Here's a little more about him:
Brief Overview of Congressman Paul’s Record:
He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.
He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war. He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.
He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.
Congressman Paul introduces numerous pieces of substantive legislation each year, probably more than any single member of Congress

I lived in Texas (Dallas area) for five years (1992-1997). I hated it, but not for the reasons in this blog. Most of my objections were cultural, but I also hated the flatness, the distance from the ocean, the lack of trees, and the awful summers. Texas has to be among the five ugliest states in America, even Rhode Island beats it hands down. Most of all, I disliked: People with little class who think they can buy class by owning an over-sized house, thanks to the low price of housing (after all, they need to pay you a premium to live in Texas). Texans murder the English language, it's fixing, sitting, and standing, not fixin', sittin', and standin'. To fix means to REpair, to get ready means to PREpare. The plural of you is you, not y'all. Whether you are addressing one person, or 500, you refer to them as "you." No matter what they tell you, cowboy boots do NOT go with formal wear. Bacon fat is not a vegetable, and does not belong in vegetables. Haven't you people heard of cholesterol? No, I haven't been saved YET — I'm still alive, you nitwits. I'm still working on being saved. I'll be saved when I'm dead, judged, and in heaven, which hopefully bears little resemblance to Texas. Funny, Jews in New York ever asked me if I was saved, or if I had accepted Moses as my personal prophet, or tried to get me to come to their synagogue. They left me alone to be Catholic and I left them alone to be Jewish. Get the point, Southern evangelicals? And finally, Blue Bell ice cream is the WORST ice cream I've ever had in the United States! Try Hood in New England, Kemp's in Minnesota, and Edy's or Dreyers from California. They're all better than Blue Bell.

Your postings are very interesting, if you prefer fiction. Your statistics are a complete farce. People, if you want facts, don't waste your time here. Try http://www.statemaster.com/red/graph/ene_res_pri_ele_percap-residential-prices-electricity-per-capita&int=-1. There you will find Texas is second to the lowest when it comes to electricy prices per capita. Hmmm.... Texas is 3rd in Postsecondary Degrees Awarded by state. Which says a lot considering we have so many illigals holding our children back because they can barely speak the English language. Oh, and yes, please take the illigal immigrants with you when you go. Check the stats on that Einstein. Per capita, 4.5% in Texas. Put a democrat like yourself in office, and we'll all be on welfare in no time! You'll have plenty to complain about then.

With regard to those who posted messages to the effect that Texas' woes could be blamed on illegal immigrants and (sic) "wetbacks", I am reluctantly forced to concur. We need to evict all the Red River wetbacks and send them back to America.

Maybe because I'm older, but I seem to recall a time when the Texas economy was better than that of many other states and many a northern Émigré found his or her way down here from the US. That was when things started going bad for Texas.

I also remember numerous books being offered in stores explaining Texas customs, culture, and history to those foreigners who came from lands that had none.

Here's something else for you idiots:

A majority of people who moved out of Massachusetts last year report they are very satisfied with life in their new state and would not move back, a Boston Globe poll has found.

Seventy-three percent of those surveyed said they live in a home that is bigger than their home in Massachusetts was. Fifty-four percent said their standard of living is higher now.

The top reason people gave for leaving Massachusetts was a better job, followed by the cost of housing, family ties, and the weather. In a separate set of questions, 50 percent of those surveyed said the cost of housing was a ''major factor," and a better job was cited as a ''major factor" by 39 percent.

The findings underscored the difficulties of living, raising children, and earning enough money in Massachusetts, and suggested that these fundamental aspirations of the American middle-class are often easier for people to achieve outside the state.

The wide-ranging poll was the first of its kind to measure the motivations of people who have left Massachusetts, whose population of 6.39 million dropped by nearly 19,000 between 2003 and 2005, according to Census data.

The taxes, the corruption (you guys in Texas think you have it bad?!?! haha!), the Big Dig. Oh yeah, it's currently 125 degrees out. I love this place and plan on staying. Blue states suck. Alghouth Texas gained population, it was a result of inbreeding. In fact, many of the Texan inbreeders have posted on this blog about how "great" that shit hole of a dump with bible thumping, cousin' kissin', red-neck, hateful, jesus freaks,
sub-human assholes exist. Hey, here's an idea, why don't we put ALL ths creepy conservative republicans in Texas, and then bomb the shit out of it, you know, like we did in Iraq. We can say it's to preserve democracy, or sya it's because that's what jesus (small j) wants, or because it's the patriotic thing to do. You people are morons. If anyone would like to elaborate, my email address

You right wing nut job pussies should try living in Boston for a while. My roommates couldn't believe how low the quality of life in Texas was when I told them. People cannot flee that state fast enough. The taxes, the corruption (we've got it much better here in the North) Oh yeah, it's currently 125 degrees outside in Houston. Anyway, I love this place (Boston), and plan on staying. Blue states suck. Alghouth Texas gained population, it was a result of inbreeding. In fact, many of the Texan inbreeders have posted on this blog about how "great" that shit hole of a dump with bible thumping, cousin' kissin', red-neck, hateful, jesus freaks,sub-human assholes really is. Hey, here's an idea, why don't we put ALL ths creepy conservative republicans in Texas (isn't that where the suck each others blood anyway?), and then bomb the shit out of it. You know, like we did in Iraq. We can say it's to preserve democracy, or because that's what jesus (small j) wants, or because it's the patriotic thing to do. Of course in Iraq, we are there for oil, (how did our oil get under their soil anyway), but in this case it really would be to save America. By the way, wouldn't America, and the world for that matter, be a better place if that cow-tipping, immigrant hating, whiney right wing bitching, bush producing state was wiped from the map. Speaking of bush, well, we all know by now that the U.S. would be better off with a shrub than a bush. Anyway, the point is, you people are morons. You are shameful, no good, worthless asses that have corrupted the country and the world. Fuck yourselves, and to hell with y'all.

With Love from beautiful Boston

I find this document very bashful. I do agree, a lot of Texas is rather terrible, but where I live, it is very rich, very wealthy, very nice. It is perfect.

There are Mansions, directly next to each other, just like a normal neighborhood, but instead of the houses next to each other, the houses are replaced with mansions. If you live in a "good" piece of Texas, you will love Texas.

Also, people where I live have a very high intellectual content. I do a lot of professional programming, I primarily do web programming (like PHP), but I can also work in two and three dimensions in game programming (Like C++). I do a lot more then just PHP and C++ though.

I will be moving to TX by the end of the year. I am really looking forward to it.I can live like a King there. It is really cheap.

Come live in NJ for a while, you will see how good you have it in TX. I can buy 3 or 4 houses in Tx for the price of 1 here. You can not get a good house for under $350,000. Even one for 350k you have to fix it up. Property taxes are high as well. Most places they are 5k to 15k and up a year. You are lucky if you have taxes under 5,000. My husbands parents have to move becuase thier property taxes are now 15k a year, on a lot thats small and houses on very side of you.

Car insurance, highest in the US.
Schools, they just suck. Crime, very high.

There are way worse places to live then TX. Look at some other states and you will see how good you have it.
