Sit down and shutup Shelley.

In the "No class what so ever" category, City Councilwomen Shelley Sekula-Gibbs used the city council meeting on the day of the funeral of Officer Rodney Johnson to further her attacks on immigrants in Houston. During her comments, nine members of City Council walked out on her.

Wednesday's walkout occurred near the end of the weekly council meeting, when members get time to talk about issues of their choice.

...

When it was Sekula-Gibbs' turn to speak, she said Mayor Bill White now had the chance to repeal what she calls the department's "sanctuary" policy.

"I hope that you will use this opportunity to make this change that has been needed for many, many years," she said.

...

"I was embarrassed to be in the room with somebody talking like that," said Councilwoman Toni Lawrence, a Republican and one of the first to leave.

Sekula has been on a vote getting, immigrant bashing, campaign as part of her "Congressman for a month" strategy by aligning herself with the ultra right wing, immigrant bashing organization "Protect Our Citizens". She has sent emails referring to the organization urging Houstonians to take anti-immigrant petitions to their churches for signature, while her own church was very much against it.

Sekula has let the thrill of her "Congressman for a month" campaign cloud her common sense and decency by looking for the anti-immigrant and racist vote within Houston and District 22.

Councilman Ronald Green, who spoke after Sekula-Gibbs, was applauded by his colleagues for denouncing her comments.

''You wouldn't stoop so low to use this man's memory to advance a political career that may or may not be going anywhere," he said.

Personal note: I worked with Shelley on stopping the San Jacinto Rail. I didn't vote for her for City Council, and I will not vote for her for Congress either, but I at least had respect for her. That was until her attack on immigrants. Instead of working with the community and our police force to resolve a very complicated issue, she has sided with some of the most anti-immigrant and racist people in the area. Even Dick Cheney wouldn't stoop so low.

She should do us all a favor and shut the hell up.

Yeah -- a child-molesting mojado kills a cop to avoid being deported again, and some folks think it is related to the immigration issue. How insensitive and racist can they be!

Some folks think it is inapproprate to grandstand about your unwinnable congressional race while offering condolences to a mourning family. How insensitive and un-American can they be!

This is EXACTLY what this issue is all about. Mojado. I havent heard that used since the KKK was in town.

So chickenshit anonymous, I will leave your post up to show your kind. The face of the republican party.

I for one am glad somebody in city council had the integrity to speak up about the sanctuary policy in Houston, I'm sad it wasn't a Democrat.

What better time to talk about a policy that contributed to this tragedy? This is NOT a winning issue for us.

We are perceived as weak on border control and not acknowledging that the sanctuary policy aids and abets illegal is bad politics.

Sekula-Gibbs outburst reminds me of when the supporters of stem cell researched used the accident and subsequent death of Christopher Reeves to draw attention and funding to the cause. Oh....never mind.

There is a time and place for shelley to put her foot in her mouth. Yesterday wasnt the time and the city council meeting wasnt the place.

The only people who agree with what she did are probably racist themselves.

Or the KKK. Or a republican.

You people are sick individuals.

If you think you are a Democrat and support what this idiot of a candidate did, then you are not sick.

You are ignorant.

When is the best time to talk about the negative effects of the sactuary city policy?

40-year old Houston policeman Rodney Johnson was buried Wednesday, leaving behind a broken-hearted family, including his wife, mother, and five children. He was murdered by illegal alien Juan Quintero, a Mexican national. In 1999 Quintero was convicted of molesting a 12-year old Texas girl and deported, but he came right back across the border unimpeded. So why do these things continue to happen? Number one, no president in the past thirty years has taken effective action to secure the border. Number two, Houston does not enforce immigration law. There are an estimated 400,000 illegals in Houston, yet Mayor Bill White and Police Chief Harold Hurtt have actively lobbied against cracking down on the chaos. Number three, the liberal media continues to oppose securing the border and allowing local authorities to detain illegal aliens. The New York Times editorialized that allowing state and local law enforcement to assist the feds was 'poisonous.' It is a basic secular-progressive position that undocumented foreigners should have the full rights of Americans when they come here illegally. The hidden agenda is that open borders will allow a demographic shift in this country that will eventually bring power to the progressives. So a combination of poor presidential leadership on the border, weak city leaders who pander to voting blocs, and a far left media led to the death of Officer Rodney Johnson. And that is the truth."

Jesus, is there a Republican left who has any respect for the truth?

Anonymous blames the "liberal media" for our immigration policy, says it is promoting a "secular-progressive" position that all immigrants should have the full rights of Americans when they come here illegally.

Uh, no - that statement is incorrect. You are inventing your own "facts", anonymous.

The fact is that our national government is controlled entirely by Republicans and has been for several years now. The first obligation of our federal government is to secure our borders. This is the failure of Republican elected officials, beginning with our president, George W. Bush, that is the problem here. The truth and facts do still matter, anonymous.

Is there a Democrat left who has any respect for the territorial integrity of the United States, Misty?

Oh, and by the way -- the term used in the first comment above refers to immigration status, NOT race or ethnicity.

Anon - sorry, but you really should at least make an effort to live in the same reality as the rest of us, inconvenient as that may be. Your view of "the facts" regarding this "secular-progressive" position is an invention in your own uninformed mind. No such position exists. No one wants to allow illegals to have full rights of citizenship. Name one Democrat who is on the record saying otherwise.

On the other hand, perhaps you can defend major Republican contributor Bob Perry's (Perry Homes) record of being one of the largest, if not THE largest, employer of illegals in Texas. As I have said before, if it weren't for hypocrisy, Republicans would have no personal values at all.

Anon - one last comment: you use the term "secular-progressive", which appears to be not-so-cleverly disguised right wing code. Didn't you forget to say leftist, godless and humanistic?

So, I'm curious. What would be your alternative to "secular" and "progressive" public policies? "Religious" and "antiquated"?

Oh, and by the way -- I'd have no problem with Bob Perry's business being wiped out with fines -- and him and his top executives doing a long stretch in jail -- for employing illegals.

On the other hand, you folks want to legalize them all and invite more besides.
